Teaching & Consulting

Goldenrod Wild Arts offers teaching and consulting services for schools, homeschool groups, nonprofits, and community organizations seeking meaningful, nature-based learning experiences. With decades of experience designing award-winning programs, Starr Weems helps educators and families create hands-on opportunities that connect young people to plants, place, and traditional skills.

Classes & Workshops

Starr teaches in-person classes at the Goldenrod Wild Arts shop in Double Springs, Alabama, with offerings for children, teens, and adults. Classes may include:

  • Introduction to herbalism and medicinal plants
  • Southern folk medicine and plant traditions
  • Native plants and ethical wildcrafting
  • Herbal preparations and home remedies
  • Food preservation and seasonal skills
  • Natural dyes, plant-based art, and traditional crafts

Programs are designed to be practical, place-based, and age-appropriate.

Homeschool & Co-Op Classes

Full season homeschool pass (5-6 classes)       $150 per student 

Seasonal classes meet approximately every three weeks and are designed to follow the rhythms of the year. Group size, age range, and location are discussed in advance.

School & Homeschool Consulting

Starr is available to consult with public schools, private schools, and homeschool groups interested in developing or strengthening nature-based education programs. Consulting services may include:

  • Designing outdoor classrooms and learning gardens
  • Developing nature studies or environmental education curricula
  • Integrating herbalism, ethnobotany, and traditional skills into existing programs
  • Supporting project-based and interdisciplinary learning
  • Advising on native plant gardens and habitat-focused spaces
  • Organizing field trips and outdoor experiences that align with learning goals

Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in education, Starr brings a practical understanding of curriculum design, accessibility, and real-world classroom needs.

Program Development & Professional Support

Goldenrod Wild Arts also partners with organizations and educators to:

  • Build sustainable, long-term outdoor education programs
  • Align nature-based learning with educational standards and goals
  • Create inclusive and accessible outdoor learning experiences
  • Support grant-funded or community-supported projects

Pricing

I aim to keep my work accessible while honoring the time, experience, and care that goes into it. If cost is a concern, I’m happy to talk through options or suggest a shorter session or package that fits your needs.

Consulting sessions may include medicinal/ native garden planning, arts and traditional skills integration, curriculum design and standards alignment, homeschool support, program design, outdoor learning guidance, or help designing outdoor learning spaces.

Professional Development for Educators

I offer professional development for schools and districts focused on place-based learning, outdoor education, ecology, and integrating art and nature into existing curriculum. Sessions are practical, hands-on, and designed by a veteran classroom teacher.

Pricing varies based on length, group size, and customization. Professional development sessions require extensive preparation, customization, and facilitation for larger groups. Pricing reflects the scope of the work.
